Trusted Friends

The days of forgetting your password may be over. Facebook is testing a new tool called Trusted Friends, which allows you to set 3 to 5 of your Facebook friends (no more and no less) to recieve a special if you get locked out of your Facebook account. The tool is currently being tested on some of the 800 million Facebook users.
If the feature is enabled and you forget your password, simply click "forgot my password" and messages will be sent to your selected friends containg the code. Then you must retrieve the code from your friend(s) to unlock your account.

I think that this idea is really good. Some might be wary of this method, though. Since you get to chose which friends you trust, it might be something I try.

If you'd like to try Trusted Friends, go to your security settings under your Account. Then, simply chose the friends you trust.

  1. Not sure how I feel about that. I have some awesome friends, but they also have a sense of humor and could really play a joke on me. I think that it is an interesting concept and worth looking at tho. I would maybe do this with my parents. Take in mind I have had Facebook for 5 or so years and just added my parents this year. Just goes to show you just how much Facebook is changing. I significantly limit the content on my profile now and use it more for networking.

  2. What won't Facebook try? First, a constant, updating news feed. Second, subscribing to friends. Third, Close Friends. Zuckerberg and his team are really risking it all for the success of Facebook. And, of course, it works. Facebook is at a point where it can do pretty much anything once. If the people don't like it, they change it again. So what if they lose a million users; they've got plenty to spare. Facebook is going to be a way of life, and soon, I won't be surprised, if work platforms or learning platforms are integrated through Facebook. Maybe that would get students to learn or study....

  3. I wonder why they are choosing to try this. It sounds kind of silly to me. We have all forgotten passwords before and the good old send me an email thing always works and is fast. This sounds to me like it could be more of a pain than its worth. I do give Facebook credit for trying, but sometimes I have a hard time agreeing with what they do.

  4. Facebook seems to always be trying something. This is an interesting idea that may or may not take off! It is neat that they are involving friends in the process of recovering your password again. I don’t ever forget my password so this is something I may not pay too much attention to. However, it is in innovative idea that may be useful to a lot of people. Great find Megan and great post! I enjoyed reading it very much!

  5. Hmmm. This is very interesting! Although this situation would be a nightmare for me (my friends can't get a handle on their own passwords, much less mine) there would be NO ONE I would trust enough. I wonder, can this information allow others onto your page? As adults we might be ok with this idea, but think of the junior high kids- that would be a total mess.
