New way to pay your friends

PayPal has launched a new Facebook app...one that allows you to send money to your friends through the social networking site. The app, simply named Send Money, gives you the option of sending a card with the money or just the money alone. There is no transaction fee for this service.

I can see the uses for this... sending money to friends and relatives for their birthday or Christmas. But it really has me wondering how secure it is. I'm sure Facebook and PayPal both have taken extensive measures to ensure it's security...but I'm still not sold on it. What do you guys think? Would you send money over Facebook, or does it scare you as much as it scares me?

  1. To say the truth, I have never really trusted PayPal. While it sounds legitimate on paper, I cannot help but think of all the things that could go wrong. Now that they have opened PayPal and placed it on Facebook, one cannot help but imagine the breaches in security. Facebook is a social networking site, not a site I would give my credit card number to. It's similar to all the Facebook games that you could pay for additional credits/coins. I would never do such a thing simply because I did not want Facebook to have that personal of information. This may be a step too far, but I guess only time will tell how popular such an endeavor is.

  2. Interesting. I was not aware of this new app available on Facebook. It is a cool idea, although I do not trust Facebook. In fact I don't even trust Facebook enough to put my real name on my Facebook page instead my pen name. What am I scared of? I don't know. The unknown. Nonetheless, I do think this is pretty cool. My nephew had a birthday on November 4. He also returned home from basic training in August. His cards still lay on my table, and today is November 20. Would this have saved me some time? Absolutely!

As far as PayPal goes, I do business through eBay and craigslist quite often and even though I have not always been 100% comfortable, I have used it. To date, I have not had any issues, and I have sales revenue of about $300 per month on average. But knows about the future, and whether or not this was a wise move.

    Interesting post!

  3. I don't really like the idea. I have used PayPal several times before and I have never had any issues. But all the negative things you hear about security and Facebook has to make one think that this may not be such a good idea.
I agree that the two companies have probably done enough testing on the matter, but I don't see myself using it anytime in the near future!

  4. Interesting blog Megan! I feel as if the idea has some potential. No longer does one have to send a card with money. However, I do think that the idea of a card is much more personal. If one just sends money to another, the person may not be as appreciative. Sending a card would show that one spent time to pick out a card and send it via mail. It is a very intriguing idea and I think it has some advantages. I am excited to see how it plays out in the future!
